Yes, every player must attend at least one assessment for his or her grade level and gender. These assessments are critical to team placement.
Each team will have at least one practice per week. Our season starts November 1st, and the league season starts January 9th. All games are on the weekend
Yes - In 4th through 8th grade, CYO Marin fields two divisions of play. The highly competitive “A” division is for top players in their grade who are especially committed to basketball. The “B” division, which has many more teams, is for players looking to play in an organized league and further develop their skills. Parents should realize that players sometimes matriculate from A teams to B teams and vice versa as they move through different grades in the program. In a typical grade, there is one A Team and 2-6 B teams.
Not necessarily. All players develop at different paces. Some children focus and put in a tremendous amount of time to move up to the A team or maintain their spot on the roster during the off season. It is possible that we have 10 new players on the A team or the same 10 returning players on the A Team.
Experienced Independent evaluators oversee the process to ensure fairness. In addition, they are looking to compose the best team (balance). Often, that does not mean the best 10 players. For example, if a certain grade is extremely deep and talented in one area, some of those players might not make the A team.
Either draft and/or player allocation - We do our best to ensure all our B teams are balanced and in a position to be competitive. We will never deliberately “stack” one B team at the expense of other B teams. It is not fair to the other teams in our program and the league.
We recognize that athletes play multiple sports during the year and we advise that each player give priority to the “in-season” sport in case of a conflict. We consider CYO basketball the winter sport priority. In addition, we expect players to attend pre-season practices and games when there are no conflicts with other sports. All A Team players must prioritize CYO once the season begins.
Each CYO parish in Marin has established geographic boundaries, similar to the geographic boundaries set for public schools, Little League baseball, etc. However, your child may play for another parish team if he or she attends that parish’s school or you are a parish member at that church.
Yes, the Mount Carmel Catholic community welcomes children and families who are interested in a religious education program to visit the following website for more information: RE.mountcarmelmv.org . Team practices or games will not be scheduled at the same time as Religious education classes.
No. We do not take requests for “friends” to play together nor do we take requests for a player to be on a certain coach’s team (the coach’s child is the exception). Parents should expect and encourage their players to meet and develop new friends from the team during the season.
Our goal is to place every child on a team as long as we can field enough teams for his/her grade and gender.
After all teams have been selected, players who haven’t been drafted – in a rare instance – will be placed on a waitlist for that grade.
Full refunds will be provided for waitlisted players who decide not to play.
If you withdraw before tryouts, you will receive a full refund. We provide full refunds up to November 1st. If you withdraw after tryouts but before the 1st practice, you will receive a 50% refund. If you withdraw after the 1st practice, there is no refund. The CYO Board reserves the right to make amend the above on a case-by-case basis.
We do offer financial aid! Applicants need to fill out our questionnaire and provide appropriate documentation.
Mt. Carmel CYO will provide a prorated refund.
COVID Related
We plan to follow the Marin Health and Human Services public health protocol, which we believe is in line with current Mill Valley School District guidelines. Please see below for further details:All Mt. Carmel (MTC) Volunteer Coaches and Staff are required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination. If any Coach is unable to be vaccinated, MTC will address those situations on a case-by-case basis. At a minimum, any unvaccinated coach will be required to do weekly COVID-19 screening testing, per the guidelines.
All eligible participants, including players 12 years and older, parents, referees, volunteers and spectators, are encouraged to get vaccinated to help protect the majority of MTC players who are under 12 and therefore ineligible to receive the COVID vaccine.
Per the Public Health Update and CDC guidelines, masks are not required outdoors but are recommended when distancing is not possible. All MTC Coaches will be provided with instructions for reducing or eliminating close contact during practices and games. “Close contact” is defined as 15 minutes or more of masked or unmasked exposure, within a proximity of 6 feet or less, within a 24 hour period. All coaches should wear masks when distancing is not possible. Unvaccinated players, in particular, are encouraged to wear a mask while on the sideline, in team huddles, and in carpools or other “off-the-field” activities.
In the event of a COVID exposure, MVSC will continue to use the Marin County Decision Trees to determine the appropriate steps. Please note there are different protocols for Vaccinated individuals and Unvaccinated or Partially Vaccinated individuals.
Decision Tree - VACCINATED
Decision Tree - PARTIALLY VACCINATED or UNVACCINATED
All decisions regarding exposure, isolation/quarantine and return to play will be based on these decision trees, in addition to the recommendation of any impacted player or staff member’s medical provider.
If your child shows symptoms of illness or has tested positive for COVID-19, please send an email to MtCarmelBBall@gmail.com including date of symptom onset or positive test, as well as last date of interaction with the team, so that MTC can take any appropriate steps to notify other families.
